75th Anniversary of the Evacuation of Torres Strait Islanders to Cherbourg

On the 14th of September a potent ceremony was held at the Ration Shed Museum to acknowledge the 75th anniversary of the evacuation of Torres Strait Islanders from the Torres Strait during WW11. Making Exterior artworks & furniture

Local artists worked closely with Ratartat, a group of Specialist artists and a master craftsman, Owen Foale to produce garden furniture and exterior art works. 2017 Fun Run – best yet!

This is the fourth Fun Run we have had and over 500 runners and walkers took part – a record attendance. It is a major fundraiser for the Ration Shed Museum but it is so much more than that too – it’s about Reconciliation, Fun, Friendship, health, families and bringing people together. A moving ANZAC Ceremony in Cherbourg

A beautiful ANZAC ceremony was held in Cherbourg on ANZAC Day.  To honour the Black Diggers from WW1, a smoking ceremony took place calling the spirits of fallen soldiers back to country while children held photo’s or the names of the soldiers. Celebrating NAIDOC 2016 in the rain!

  We organized our community NAIDOC Open Day for the 5th of July and had been planning it for weeks. In the early morning of the 5th – it began pouring with rain. DOMO Girls Premiere

We started making the DOMO Girls Film in 2015 and many former DOMO Girls were invited to participate. The film was directed by Mark Newman and produced by Sandra Morgan & Robyn Hofmeyr. 2016 Reconciliation Fun Run – a great success!

Our third Reconciliation Fun Run was a great success – a day of building bridges, having fun and healthy living. Over 450 runners registered. Many Threads organise International Women’s Day event

The Many Threads group organised a special celebration for International Women’s Day on the 9th of March. The room was decorated with purple and green balloons and all the Elders and women of Cherbourg were invited to the celebration. Laurie Nilsen runs art workshop in Cherbourg

The Cherbourg Yidding artists were fortunate to be able to participate in a wonderful workshop run by well-known Indigenous artists Laurie Nilsen. Laurie is from Manadandanji country. He trained in graphic arts and uses drawing, painting and sculpture as a medium. His works often feature barbed wire   → View item
