Welcome to the Ration Shed Museum

Sandra Morgan, Cherbourg ChairpersonGreetings

I’m Sandra Morgan, chairperson of the Ration Shed Museum. I was raised in Cherbourg and have lived here all my life and I’m passionate about preserving our history.

We use the Ration Shed as a space to tell our stories and we would like visitors to see and experience what life was like for our people living under the Aboriginal Protection Act during the first half of the 20th century, as well as show them the many wonderful aspects of Aboriginal culture and contemporary Cherbourg life.

We hope 2017 is going to be a good year. There are big changes planned for this year as we develop and grow bigger. We are putting in place strong governance practices and are advertising for a new Administration Officer and Manager. Our early Year Project HIPPY (Home Based Interaction Program for Parents and Youngsters) is in its 2nd year and going from strength to strength. Arts QLD have funded us to run a Pottery project and we are going to be revitalising our Boys Dormitory exhibition, creating more educational content for school and continuing to restore and renovate our historic buildings.

We also have a vibrant education program in place for schools and visitors. View our Education page to explore what we have to offer. We hope this site will encourage you to come and visit us at the Ration Shed Museum. We are always on the look out for support and feedback.

Our opening hours are from 9am-4pm – Monday until Thursday. Friday 9am- 1pm. Bookings for weekends can only be made for large groups and will incur a extra fee.

Come and visit us and share our dream. I look forward to meeting you,

Sandra

Ration Shed is open to visitors

The floods in Cherbourg devastated our community – we lost a young woman in the flood waters, houses were destroyed and we were cut off from everything. Food needed to be flown in.
