The Cherbourg Yidding artists were fortunate to be able to participate in a wonderful workshop run by well-known Indigenous artists Laurie Nilsen. Laurie is from Manadandanji country. He trained in graphic arts and uses drawing, painting and sculpture as a medium. His works often feature barbed wire and emu’s (his totem) and his art works express cultural, political and environmental concerns. His artwork is held in numerous private and public collections.
When Laurie came to work with the Cherbourg Yidding artists, he had us all drawing emu’s. Emu’s are close to our hearts to (we used to have an Emu farm in Cherbourg) The artists experimented with water colours, pencils and black ink. Have a look at some of the deadly emu’s that were produced. Each one is so different. Everyone loved the workshop and we want Laurie to come back and run a sculpture workshop.
This workshop was funded by IRADF (Indigenous Regional Arts Development Fund)
