This is the fourth Fun Run we have had and over 500 runners and walkers took part – a record attendance. It is a major fundraiser for the Ration Shed Museum but it is so much more than that too – it’s about Reconciliation, Fun, Friendship, health, families and bringing people together.
The race started in light fog at the Murgon Showgrounds about 8:00am after a blessing by Cherbourg pastor Willie Moses. Robert de Castella – or “Deek” as he is known – led the crowd through a light warm-up routine. And then everyone was off!
Some of the runners included Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien, South Burnett Deputy Mayor Kathy Duff, Clare O’Connor, the Director-General of the Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships and Chris Sarra from the Stronger Smarter institute, Larissa Chambers and other Athletics Australia champions.
There were runners in tutus, Mexican hats, coloured wigs and a skeleton with “No Body to Run with!”
Seven kilometres later, after climbing “heartbreak hill” into Cherbourg, the runners joined family members and friends in the Barambah park opposite the Ration Shed Museum to enjoy the food on offer, listen to music and watch the Wakka Gubbi Dancers. There were stalls to look at and at the back of the Ration Shed, face-painting and art for children.
A wonderful day was had by all and our hearts are filled with happiness!
The Ration Shed Museum wish to thank our sponsors, participants, organisers and all those the contributed to making the day the success it was. It was wonderful to have the support of Robert de Castella, Larissa Chambers and all the other wonderful Athletic Australia champions.
